Meet the CLI Team
Coffee Lab International (CLI) has been operating as an independent coffee testing and educational facility serving all facets of the coffee industry since 1995. We are a team of devoted and enthusiastic coffee professionals who have dedicated much of our lives to the global coffee industry. Founder Mané Alves, has gathered an in-house team of Licensed Q Graders and who are well versed in evaluating coffee of all quality levels from around the world. The team is experienced in sensory evaluation of coffees ranging from single origin greens to roasted finished products across various packaging methods. CLI works with customers from all segments of the coffee industry; from small coffee farmers, exporters, importers, micro-roasters and large commercial roasters, to multi-national retailers, c-stores, restaurant chains, cafes, and food service providers.
CLI’s headquarters are based in Waterbury Center, Vermont and is a
Certified Specialty Coffee Association (SCA) Lab and Campus.
Mane has been working in the wine and coffee industries for over 30 years. As a certified Q Instructor, SCA Authorized Trainer and International Coffee Tasting Judge, Mané's reputation as a distinguished cupper & instructor is unparalleled. He travels extensively to coffee producing countries throughout Central America, South America, Africa, & Asia where he conducts Q Grader courses and calibrations, seminars on coffee production and quality standards. Fluent in his native language Portuguese, as well as Spanish, French and English, he is able to communicate directly with coffee professionals at source throughout the Americas. A member of CQI since its inception & a past director of SCA's Technical Standards Committee, Mané founded CLI's sister companies Vermont Artisan Coffee & Tea, in 2001, and CLI's School of Coffee in 2004. Mane is a Specialty Tea Institute Level III Tea Taster.

Shannon has been working in the coffee industry for over 20 years. As CLI Director, Shannon sets and implements CLI’s strategic course. She is a Certified Q Grader for both Robusta and Arabica coffees, an International Coffee Tasting Judge and Specialty Tea Institute Certified Level II Taster. Shannon brings a vast history of cupping and tasting skills to the table along with beverage research and development knowledge, design and training of cupping and sensory panels, roast profile management, product innovation, equipment optimization as well as coffee quality training for customers globally.
CLI Operations and School of Coffee Manager
Debby has been working in the beverage and coffee industries for over 12 years. She brings strong knowledge of all facets of coffee development and quality control systems, as well as sensory panel development, training, evaluation and analysis. Debby is a Licensed Q Arabica and Robusta Coffee Grader, Specialty Tea Institute Level II Tea Taster and an SCA Certified Lead Instructor. She has traveled to various source countries to conduct quality training and calibration and is actively involved in SCA courses. In addition to having completed the Applied Sensory and Consumer Science Graduate Certificate Program at UC Davis she holds a B.A. in Political Science and Environmental Studies from Johnson State College.
CLI School of Coffee Roast Specialist
Josh brings over 12 years of experience in coffee and has a professional background as a Master Roaster. His sensory knowledge includes cupping and recipe development. Josh has extensive experience in sensory screenings utilizing ISO Standards, participation as a panel member for Quality Control; communication between roasting, quality and research and development for adjustments to product profile to improve quality and consistency.
