Long ago, Coffee Lab International identified the need of “real-time” data collection when cupping coffee to minimize the time one spends on data entry. To create the solution, we began by developing a hand-held unit whereby data is entered while coffee cupping takes place.

This hand-held unit allows the cupper to go back over the results, edit as necessary and make notes within the different categories when classifying the coffee. When the cupping is complete the cupper then sinks the unit in its cradle and the results automatically download to the customers computer file. The efficiencies enabled by this technology are immense.

This is a huge advantage over the current procedures for cupping coffees; hand-writing the results and then entering everything once again into a computer database. The margins for error are obvious, the time for double entry is a frustration and the delay before results are accessible is counted in days rather than seconds.

In addition, the complimenting software program is designed to average the results of several cuppers simultaneously. Because this is completed in “real-time” the cuppers can then have a discussion group after the results are logged and the business decisions that transpire are immediate.

We see this technology impacting several applications in scores of environments. Coffee companies that go through vast amounts of sampling and require a quick turn of results will have an advantage with the use of this software. The results of the testing could be sent simultaneously to headquarters and regional sites for immediate review and catalog.

As well, competitions and events such as cupping competitions at source and the Cupping Pavilion of the SCAA, where multiple judges are cupping up to 50 samples from like countries would benefit immensely from this application. Alike, the applications far exceed the coffee industry.
